Assignment: Observe the picture above and make a post answering the following three questions:
1. Describe what is happening in the picture.
2. What is the murderer’s excuse for the crime? Explain what he means.
3. Do you think that is a valid excuse? Can people actually use this excuse?
1. The criminal is being arrested, but trying to say it wasn't his fault.
ReplyDelete2. His excuse is that his genetic makeup caused him to commit a crime. He is saying that his propensity to do this is ingrained in his DNA, and that he simply could not help himself.
3. No, I don't think this is a valid excuse. To some extent in the "nature vs. nurture" question, I think our genes do have a great amount of influence over us. But I also think that people can change and make decisions. Look at people who have overcome addictions. There is much evidence that the propensity to become addicted to something is hereditary, but there any many people who overcome this and DECIDE not to drink, smoke, use drugs, gamble, etc.
This is a very interesting cartoon to think critically about. Two questions that come to mind are How much do our genes influence our actions? and How much does our environment, people, and things we grew up with influence our actions? I agree with Joanie when she said our genes influence us very much but we still have the power to overcome certain things due to having a will to do so. Although I do not agree that one could blame their genes entirely for their actions, I feel that maybe we should look into, perhaps, considering treatment programs for people who engage in destructive or criminal behavior. Perhaps, these people could be helped towards reformation based on a medical or therapeutic intervention.
